About the school: Old Shell Road School of Creative and Performing Arts is a magnet school with a focus on fine and performing arts.  We offer specialized classes in dance, drama, music, visual arts, as well as a plethora of programs and activities that allow students to explore and hone their artistic skills while engaging in a rigorous, arts infused core curriculum.  

Old Shell Road Magnet School was named a 2015 National Blue Ribbon School, which is the highest honor a school may receive.  The school was also the recipient of the Bicentennial School Award and was ranked #11 in Alabama by U.S. News & World Report  2021.  Since the implementation of the Alabama State Report Card, Old Shell Road Magnet School has received an A rating each year. 

Students are recognized for their academic achievements through quarterly honors programs and the National Elementary Honor Society.  In addition to providing a solid, engaging academic environment, our school develops leadership qualities and service skills through organizations such as our Student Council and team sports such as our archery team and robotics. 

Old Shell Road School of Creative and Performing Arts' teaching and learning philosophy includes an arts-infused interdisciplinary approach to a rigorous core curriculum. The school empowers students with the skills of inquiry, expression, and discovery through a variety of learning opportunities.  Emphasis is placed on communication along with critical and creative thinking skills to prepare students for future success. 

Students are afforded opportunities to discover and apply their unique talents and abilities to ensure that they become lifelong learners and lovers of the arts. All stakeholders serve as role models in promoting the ideals of our philosophy.

One of the beliefs we hold at Old Shell Road School of Creative and Performing Arts is that it is important to provide opportunities for our students to showcase their gifts and talents.  All students perform in at least one major performance per year.  Our choirs and our dance company are showcased at many events and receive many accolades.  We feel this prepares students to be confident and successful in all aspects of their lives.

We believe that professional collaboration is key to student success.  Time is allocated in the master schedule for grade level collaboration.  We also believe in teamwork.  Grade level teachers plan together, participate in professional development together, and collaborate on special projects.  To enhance communication skills, students are provided opportunities to collaborate and work together as much as possible in the classroom.   

There are many benefits to working at Old Shell Road Magnet School.  Our students are amazing.  Overall, they are very well-behaved and are very kind.  Opportunities have been provided for their talents to develop and flourish.  The faculty works well together and cares about each other.  This helps create a positive school environment that helps students thrive daily.
