Mobile County Public Schools operates under the leadership of Superintendent Chresal D. Threadgill, who was named Alabama’s Superintendent of the Year in 2021 by the School Superintendents of Alabama.

A native of Mobile, and a graduate of John L. LeFlore High School, Mr. Threadgill has proven to be an innovative leader of Alabama’s largest school district.

Under Mr. Threadgill’s leadership, MCPSS received its first-ever B on the Alabama Department of Education’s Report Card. He improved the district’s finances so that MCPSS now has a healthy reserve account in case of emergency; established the Leadership Academy to train future school system leaders; and worked with the Mobile County Board of School Commissioners to build and improve athletic facilities throughout the county. He guided MCPSS through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, receiving national recognition for broadcasting classroom lessons for grades pre-k through 12 live on local television stations during a statewide stay-at-home order.

He moved MCPSS to become a one-on-one district with student laptops. He has improved school security measures and technologies. His efforts to recruit and hire teachers and support personnel to join #TeamMCPSS through the MCPSS Career Fair received the Gold Medallion Award from the National School Public Relations Association.

He led the district through state monitoring and the Cognia accreditation process. In fact, MCPSS outscored the national average in its Cognia review by more than 40 points, illustrating that MCPSS meets nationally recognized standards for excellence in education and is continually working to improve.

“I am very proud of the work that our schools are doing, each and every day, to ensure the success of our students,” Mr. Threadgill said.

Mr. Threadgill is known for his outreach to the community, where he has gone outside the walls of the classroom to build lasting partnerships with other governmental agencies and organizations. Mr. Threadgill has a passion for doing what is best for ALL children and this philosophy is deeply engrained in the work he does each day to serve the students of Alabama.

Mr. Threadgill earned a bachelor’s degree from Troy University and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Alabama State University. He began his educational career at Greenville Middle School, where he served as a P.E. teacher and coach. After only two years, the administration took note of Mr. Threadgill’s excellent leadership abilities, and he became vice principal. He relocated to Troy, where he was assistant principal and then principal of Charles Henderson Middle School, and eventually assistant superintendent of Troy City Schools. He served as superintendent of Elba City Schools for five years before returning home to become Chief of Staff for Mobile County Public Schools. He was named superintendent of Mobile County Public Schools in 2018, overseeing 7,500 employees and approximately 53,000 students at 90 schools.

Throughout many of Mr. Threadgill’s leadership positions, he has received numerous accolades and recognitions for his dedication and commitment in the field of education. Mr. Threadgill was selected as the sole representative from the State of Alabama to participate in the Texas Superintendent’s Academy at Lamar University. In addition, he has served as the District III President of the Alabama School Superintendents Association and as Chairman of the Advisory Council for the College of Education at Troy University. He was featured in The School Superintendents Association (AASA) publication based on his proven record of leadership within the field of education.

Throughout his journey, Mr. Threadgill’s priority has remained with his ultimate support system - his family. Chresal is married to LaTanya Threadgill, and together they have three beautiful children, Sydni, Alex, and Coleman.
