About the school: Hutchens Elementary is the only PreK-2 school in Mobile County. We are a supportive family with a focus on social-emotional wellbeing, positive relationships, student-connectedness, and academic success for all students. At #OurHut, we are all committed to working hard to ensure that all Hutchens Elementary cardinals receive a quality education in a caring, safe, and nurturing environment.
Implementing the Science of Reading across all grade levels, we work to build a strong literacy foundation using multisensory strategies, phonological awareness, and phonics-based instruction. Our teachers participate in research based professional development helping them to become more diversified in their instructional techniques and ensure all students are provided with the literacy skills needed to meet or exceed grade-level standards. Students also receive counseling and library lessons, as well as a weekly visit to our science lab, “The Nest,” where they engage in hands-on science experiences.
Hutchens Elementary strives to grow each and every child every day. Students participate in clubs and student leadership roles. Students are given the opportunity to interview for leadership roles and choose a club of choice. Clubs meet monthly and allow all students to show leadership and feel a sense of belonging.
We also believe communication is key, and we strive to communicate with our families in many ways. Teachers provide weekly newsletters to inform parents of our upcoming events and important classroom information. Our school keeps families informed on social media, our school website, and with the monthly digital publication of the Hutchens Highlights. Families are always invited to participate in school activities which positively impact our school culture.
At Hutchens, we believe it is important for children to develop socially and emotionally, not just academically. Our stakeholders provide students with opportunities to develop by funding art and music classes throughout the school year. They also donate funds to help cover the expenses of our clubs so students can have the opportunity to experience new things. Our Hutchens PTA is active and vital for the success of our school.
Hutchens is an extraordinary place for students to learn and grow. We value our stakeholders and their influence within the school community. Establishing a partnership between parents, students, and staff is a crucial component of the success of each student at Hutchens Elementary.
