About the school: William Hooper (W.H.) Council Traditional School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program magnet school. Council educates students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. As a magnet school, Council’s students are selected by lottery and come from communities throughout the Mobile County area. Council is the first and only IB elementary school in Mobile County Public School System. An IB education leads to the development of inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world though intercultural understanding and respect.
Council’s magnet focus is Communication. Council offers special classes in Spanish, art, music, strings, STEM, and technology. Council also provides classes in the library/media center, counseling, and gifted (PACE) programs. Council is proud to provide various clubs for students such as, running club, golf club, art club, STEM, GEMS, chess club, girl scouts, photography club, geography club, dance team, ambassadors, broadcasting team, math team, Spanish club, safety patrol, and student council. Council also has an archery team. Council’s mascot is the comet.
In 2021 and 2022, Council was named the #1 Elementary School in the State of Alabama by US News and World Report. Council was chosen as a Blue Ribbon School in 2013 and named a CLAS Banner School in 2014. Council receives numerous district and local awards each year in a variety of areas.
Council’s PTA has had 34 consecutive years of 100% membership. Council’s biggest strengths are the families that it serves and the hard work and commitment of all teachers and staff. Council is blessed to have a community of students, parents, teachers, and community partners that work together to make Council a great place to learn and grow.
Council’s staff serves the “whole” child and provides quality teaching and learning EVERY DAY. Council Comets plan for success and are intentional in everything that do.
